With apologies to Humphrey Bogart ...

With apologies to Humphrey Bogart "“Of all the donut shops in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

Supper with the family tonight ended at a donut shop. Elle, as usual, took the opportunity to scour the room for interesting elements. We were all at a table and she ended up at the counter. On a stool. Looking for all the world as though she was a weary traveler who just stopped in for "a cup of joe." I hope she left a tip.

We love these Thursday evening family gatherings. We love them so much that we spend twice as much time in the car going to and from them as we do actually at them. We don't mind at all. That says a lot about the people we are spending time with. Tonight it poured rain all the way to the restaurant and the traffic was hideous. But one wet slobbery smile from Paisley, one neck crunching hug from Elle, and an hour of wise cracks from those we have become accustomed to calling "The Adults," and all of the traffic faded from memory.

(Scott and Amanda, if you are reading this, I know it stinks that you can't come. But you are always mentioned, and are always loved. We don't let 300 miles keep you from our hearts.)

Okay, enough gratuitous sentimentality. I am a dad and a grandfather so every now and then I have the right to indulge myself. We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog ...

Elle wanted to be at "the big kids table" cause she knew none of you belonged at it.
